Dusty Devil On The Ground

Story Behind The Song

Harry grew up on a cotton farm southeast of Lubbock and gets nostalgic about sandstorms and such, even though it was a very depressing experience at the time. Of particular importance to anyone who has ever experienced a bad sandstorm, like the ones Woody Guthrie used tp talk and sing about, were the storms kicked up by an approaching blue norther and their dramatic effects. There is usually a dramatic drop in temperature, and often multiple tornados spawned by the accompanying thunderstorms. Surreal experience! The idea to write the song was prompted by a big dust storm photo of Lubbock that Harry happened to be using one day for his Zoom virtual background. Someone asked him what in the world that was and he responded in gest: That's Lubbock on a clear day! Bingo! Song idea! A clear day in Lubbock and a cold day in hell soon became the central idea for the song.

Lyrics

I can see it coming
They pull me from my grave
Shouting been good to know you
They carry me away
Here I am sitting
at the bottom of a well
It's a clear day in Lubbock
A cold day in hell

The wind starts blowing
I can hear my windows hum
A blue norther she is coming
No place for me to run
A perfect storm is hiding
behind that wall of brown
She ain't fooling no one
DUSTY DEVIL ON THE GROUND

She was my teacher
On that Texas plain
Words of Woody Guthrie
Picture in my brain
Gray streaks in my hair
Wrinkles in my skin
Everything I see is through
A dust covered lens

The wind starts blowing
I can hear my windows hum
A blue norther she is coming
No place for me to run
A perfect storm is hiding
behind that wall of brown
She ain't fooling no one
DUSTY DEVIL ON THE GROUND

That building was my shelter
She stood so straight and tall
A tornado could not kill her
She would twist but never fall

Here I am sitting
at the bottom of a well
It's a clear day in Lubbock
A Cold day in hell

The wind starts blowing
I can hear my windows hum
A blue norther she is coming
No place for me to run
A perfect storm is hiding
behind that wall of brown
She ain't fooling no one
DUSTY DEVIL ON THE GROUND
A perfect storm is hiding
behind that wall of brown
She ain't fooling no one
DUSTY DEVIL ON THE GROUND
